City Parks has over the years received many accolades on international, national and local level for its efforts in maintaining and building Joburg’s green legacy. 

2014

Diamond Arrow Certificate
Johannesburg Zoo is the top spot in the city to take the family.

The zoo won first prize in the “Best pace to take the family for an outing” category in the annual PMR.africa awards. Every year, PMR.africa carries out a survey of companies and institutions across Johannesburg to celebrate excellence and recognise the hard work of all those involved.

South African Landscape Institute Awards
Two parks created in partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo received awards for outstanding and unusual, high quality landscaping designs at the 2014 South African Landscape Institute (SALI) Awards.

Marina Landscaping, which was involved in designing the inner city Metro Park, received the gold award for excellence in the Landscape Construction with Design category, while Tswellapele Plant, the company responsible for the design of Lehae Park in Soweto, scooped the gold award for excellence in the Specialised Landscaping Construction category.

In addition, Tswellepele Plants received silver awards for work done on the Sophiatown Recreation Park and on playground equipment at the Kaalfontein Park. Servest Group and RSA Landscapers scored bronze awards for their work on Kakana Park and Southern Road Islands in Naturena.

Your Choice Awards - The Star
Johannesburg Zoo got the big thumbs-up from The Star readers in 2014. The Zoo was voted No. 1 in the Best Family Outing category in the newspaper's annual Your Choice competition, with especially strong scores for customer service, customer needs and wants satisfaction, and public exposure.

Loeries
BG, the Joburg Zoo's tweeting honey badger gained a following of more than 10 000 on his account @zootweetslive. And for the creativity behind the creation of the world's first animal to take to Twitter, four Loerie Awards were presented to Hellocomputer, a subsidiary of Draftfcb. The Loeries are regarded as the most prestigious awards in South Africa - the Oscars of the local advertising industry. The awards for the social media campaign were:

  • Campaign Bronze in the Brand, Identity and Collateral Design category for posters and billboards;
  • Campaign Craft Certificate in the Design Crafts category for illustrations;
  • Bronze Digital and Interactive in the Social Media category; and
  • Bronze Media Innovation in the Single Medium category.

LivCom Awards
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo received a Gold and a Silver award at the 2013 International Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom) in Xiamen, China. Endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme, The LivCom Awards is a global competition focusing on managing the environment and creating liveable communities. Our Green Outdoor Gyms received gold and the Temple of the Ancients at the Johannesburg Zoo received a silver award.

Readers' Choice - Best of the Best
The Johannesburg Zoo was voted Gauteng's best family outing by readers of The Star. The Star runs a "Readers' Choice - Best of the Best" competition every year between September and November. A form listing 204 categories is printed in the newspaper, inviting readers to nominate their favourite in each category. Categories include Best Gymnasium, Best Bank, Best Shopping Mall, Best Restaurant and Best Family Outing. Almost 14 000 readers of The Star voted the Joburg Zoo Best Family Outing.

TripAdvisor
The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam was awarded a certificate of excellence by TripAdvisor. The US-based company measures travellers' ratings of tourist destinations and issues certificates to businesses that rank in the top 10% worldwide in terms of feedback from tourists. This was the second year in a row that the Botanical Gardens received a TripAdvisor certificate; visitors rated the facility four out of five during 2012 and 2013.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo scooped a prestigious PMR.Africa Diamond award for exercising good corporate governance and being active in the environmental space.

2013 Arbor City Awards
The City of Joburg was presented with the prestigious 2013 Arbor City Award by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in Johannesburg to mark National Arbor Day on 1 September. The Arbor City 2013 Award salutes the continuity greening service excellence in greening by the City of Joburg and Johannesburg City Parks.

City Parks gets gold in Liveable Communities Awards
Johannesburg City Parks, scooped the prestigious, 1st Place Gold Award and two additional Gold Awards at the UNEP-endorsed Liveable Communities Awards in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi.

2012 Arbor City Award
The City of Joburg was presented with the prestigious 2012 Arbor City Award by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in Kimberley to mark National Arbor Day on 1 September.

PMR Golden Arrow and Diamond Arrow Awards
City Parks received the overall 1st prize for being the company doing most to protect the environment in Johannesburg. The Zoo was also recognised for being a top attraction in the City according to the respondents that participated in the annual survey on the City of Johannesburg's Metro area conducted by PMR.africa.


KAMOSO Award
For the third year in a row, City Parks walked away with a trophy in the annual national KAMOSO Awards competition hosted by the National Department Public Works. The KAMOSO Awards recognise's Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) excellence.

Awards recognise City Parks' efforts
City Parks scooped the Green Collar Training Award and AgriSETA National Excellence Award in September in recognition of their efforts to develop skills and create employment, especially among the youth.

Joburg parks gets landscape award
The institute of Landscape Architecture in South Africa has honoured Johannesburg City Parks with a special award for excellence for its outstanding contribution to landscape architecture through open space development at community level.

2010

Liveable Communities Gold Award
Liveable Communities Presentation [PDF, 5Mb]
City Parks has won a gold in the Natural Category of the Liveable Communities Award for its Greening the City legacy project. The project addresses the environmental disparities in Joburg.

 

National Greening Certificate
Awarded by the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Tourism World Academy, the certificate is to show appreciation for the participation and assistance by City Parks in the 2010 National Environmental Volunteer Project.
