Creating widespread environmental awareness among the residents of Johannesburg is a priority on City Parks’ agenda.

nyembe_centreTo this end three centres – the Dorothy Nyembe Environmental Education Centre in Soweto, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens Environmental Education Centre in Emmarentia and the Rietfontein Environmental Education Centre  in Paulshof – have been set up to reach out to local communities and school children.
These centres are run by City Parks’ environmental education unit.

It has three core focus areas:

  • Programmes aimed at school groups that deal with a wide range of environmental issues from curriculum-based topics such as animal classification, through waste and water, to biodiversity issues;
  • Community programmes that directly address environmental issues in a specific ward in which the unit works. An example of this includes illegal dumping and wetland degradation; and
  • Empowering people to take action within their communities to improve their environment, by growing food gardens and setting up feeding schemes, for example.

To hire these centres, telephone City Parks on 011 712 6604.

For more information about the programmes at Rietfontein, call Nicole or Israel on 011 803 9300.
