The pavement outside the Mandela home in Houghton was spruce up with colourful flowers and painted pots as a birthday gift to Madiba. Messages to Nelson Mandela were written on white pebbles and placed in the garden.

CITY PARKS made sure that Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday was a day to remember.

JOHANNESBURG is a better place on the night of Nelson Mandela Day – people from all walks of life have pitched in the help where they can, cleaning, planting and singing.

TREES are being planted in Alexandra and Soweto for Nelson Mandela Day, which this year marks his 93rd birthday. Community members and local learners are helping.

Every year Joburg City Parks plants a tree on Nelson Mandela Day in honour of his extraordinary commitment to society. On 18 July 2011 Executive Mayor Parks Tau planted the 93rd tree in the Mandela Peace Orchard in Thokoza Park.

Ululations filled the air in Thokoza Park, Soweto, on 18 July 2011 as people sang happy birthday and praises to Nelson Mandela. Executive Mayor Parks Tau urged those present to reflect on the contribution Madiba made towards the betterment of humanity.
