The Johannesburg Zoo is inviting Joburgers to join in its Tree of Light ceremony this December, to honour and remember those living with terminal illnesses.

SINCE 1989, the Johannesburg Zoo has hosted the Tree of Light ceremony.

The annual event shows support for people suffering with terminal illnesses, and remembers loved ones who have passed on.  It is hosted jointly by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, HospiceWits and The Star newspaper.

This year, the Tree will be switched on on 1 December.

Entrance to the Zoo is free from 17:00 and visitors will be treated to choirs, carols and candles. At 19:15, the Tree of Light will be switched on, along with more sparkling globes in the Zoo gardens.  Bring your blanket, your picnic basket and your family for a nightime picnic under Johannesburg's starry skies.

A statement on the Hospice Wits website reads: "Our objective is to awaken the community to unconditional love and healing through social responsibility. By reaching out to others, we are receiving the greatest gift of all - the true essence of being! Just as the ocean is made up of millions of droplets, our income depends upon thousands of very special gifts, each of which; no matter how big or small; makes a difference."

The Tree of Light is a message of goodwill and peace, for now and generations to come, and the money raised from the globes sold fund the Hospice's much-needed work.

Visitors can buy globes for R50, from the Hospice, and dedicate each light to a loved one. Dedications will appear on the organisation's website.

For more information telephone HospiceWits on 011 483 9139 or 011 483 9148.
