Tonight you can catch the Soweto Gospel Choir as they rejoice in the life of Nelson Mandela as part of the Soweto Festival of Light. The event starts at 4pm at the Mofolo South Nursery.

Festival of Lights5FM radio DJ Gareth Cliff will also entertain the crowds with his Christmas Carols, featuring an appearance by Zonke from Idols.

The highly anticipated Soweto Festival of Light offers visitors a range of fun filled entertainment ranging from a sandy beach area and inflatable park for the kids to music entertainment and the opportunity to showcase talents at the Soweto’s Got Talent stage. Face painting, tombola, a puppet theatre, random prizes and the chance to be pampered by sponsored hair and nail technicians makes the festival a not to be missed summer event, says Johannesburg City Parks.

The Soweto Festival of Light, held in partnership with Regina Mundi Church, began on 13 December and runs until 21 December from 4pm to 9pm daily. The nursery is on Elias Motsoaledi and Chris Hani roads in Mofolo South.

Since it began, the festival – which has been dedicated to the life and memory of Mandela – has drawn more than 10 000 people.

According to City Parks, "The Soweto Festival of Light creates job opportunities for entertainers, performance artists, security personnel, cleaners, parking attendants and child-minders that have been recruited from the greater Soweto community. The festival will also benefit several Soweto charities dedicated to caring for underprivileged children and the elderly."

Invited guests include the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau, members of the mayoral committee, Section 79 committee members, City of Johannesburg officials, learners and community representatives.
