December 2013 was a busy time for the Joburg Zoo; we welcomed 22 new baby animals and hosted more than 58 000 visitors who enjoyed picnicking on our green grounds, night tours and light festivals.

rundownEACH year visitors flock to the Zoo during December to relax with family and friends on the tranquil green lawns, but the 2013 festive season saw even more people than usual visit their favourite spot.

More than 58 000 people visited the Zoo in December 2013 to enjoy the holiday programmes on for children and to coo at the latest Zoo babies. The Zoo baby boom included 22 new additions from 11 different species, including Seba’s short-tailed bats, flamingos, waterbuck, red lechwe and mandrill.

December at the Zoo also spells festive celebrations such as the Wild Lights laid out on the Tree of Light lawn. The annual celebration, featuring illuminated animal characters, included evening tours and entertainment.  The 2013 programme billed 13-year-old DJ Kino and a solo guitarist, providing soothing tunes for a relaxing evening.

The Tree of Light lawn also hosts the Zoo's annual Tree of Light celebration, held together with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, HospiceWits and The Star newspaper to support and remember terminally ill patients.

Both celebrations, at night, offer visitors the chance to see nocturnal animals such as reptiles and small cats at play during the evening tours. The Zoo's night-time sights and sounds are a treat, especially for children.

Café Fino was also in full swing this December, offering visitors delectable eats and refreshments; the café will be open during January 2014 and beyond.
This January will also be a jam-packed month of activity and excitement at the Zoo with Zoo Trots on 12 January, as well as several new expected baby animal additions.
