Delegates to the C40 Summit, hosted in Johannesburg, took a day trip to Soweto to visit the Petrus Molefe Eco Park; the lifestyle park offers residents an outdoor gym in pleasant surrounds, greening the area and building on the City's move to shape a climate-resilient Joburg.

Some 750 delegates from the on-going fifth biennial C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group Mayors Summit visited the Joburg City Park's picturesque development, where Dlamini residents enjoy downtime and tone their muscles and build their bodies on the outdoor gym equipment.

The tour, on the first day of the Summit, included a visit to the wetlands exhibition, tree planting ceremonies, and enjoying music performed by the Eco Guides.  The visit was a fitting introduction to the city, offering guests a break from the modern confines of the Sandton Convention Centre.

The Summit, which kicked off on 4 February, is scheduled to run for three days until 6 February and allows for global municipal leaders and environmental experts to share and consider actions to mitigate the risks climate change poses in urban areas. The theme for the summit is: Towards resilient and liveable megacities: demonstrating action, impact and opportunity.

Joburg's Executive Mayor Parks Tau says, "The concept of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group is built on the premise of cities fostering partnerships with one another, in order to achieve meaningful reductions of greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks.

"A principle of working together to create and build partnerships is crucial to the success of achieving the City's strategic agenda, including matters relating to resource sustainability."

Tau is the Summit host, together with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
