metro park playground 300The custom designed Metro Park that boasts the tenth free-to-use outdoor gym in the City of Joburg, is set to be unveiled with over 1000 residents and dignitaries by the Executive Mayor, at 11:30 on Friday, 19 September 2014 cnr Ntemi Piliso and Carr Streets in Newtown.

Flanked by the iconic Mandela Bridge and the Bree and Park Station taxi ranks, the new Metro Park will form a critical component of the city’s ‘Corridors of Freedom’ initiative that links commuters and residents to recreational activities.

The new Metro Park boasts an outdoor gym with a gym instructor; a synthetic five-a-side enclosed soccer pitch; vandal proof water features and fencing; new generation play equipment; an ablution facility with dedicated cleaning staff; landscaped lawns with established trees that will provide a tree canopy with the required shade in the future; an amphitheatre area to encourage community gatherings and attract performing artists; and a dedicated security and maintenance presence, to ensure that this facility, withstands the impact of the high usage patterns endemic to parks in the inner city.

World Park’s Day reinforces that parks are the conduits that keeps communities connected and actively engaged to develop healthy minds and bodies.

Residents living in high-density, high rise units have a need for their own ‘Central Park’ in close proximity to their homes. And the mandate of city planners and decision-makers is to ensure that fit-for-purpose spaces are designed that resonates with communities to nurture a greater level of ownership.

The transformation of this previously undeveloped park into a spectacular space where residents will unite, will go a long way in building social harmony, developing civic ownership and creating health conscious communities, while simultaneously acting as a catalyst for economic empowerment.
