FAMILY entertainment with a Jurassic twist is coming to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in the form of the Dino Expo, an interactive exhibition-cum-theatrical reconstruction of the creatures that roamed the earth six-million years ago.

The Expo combines a spectacular outdoor showcase of life-size dinosaur replicas with a theatrical performance involving realistic "animatronic" dinosaurs - dubbed "The untold story of the African Dinosaur Mystery" - plus a host of fun activities for kids and adults.

The giant prehistoric reptiles will be brought back to life by artist extraordinaire David Huni, who collaborated on the Dino Expo with Dr Jonah Choiniere, a senior researcher in dinosaur palaeontology at Wits University.

On display will be Tyrannosaurus rex, one of the largest land carnivores of all time, a Pteranodon - a flying reptile with wings spanning up to six metres - as well as a number of dinosaur species discovered in South Africa: Massospodilus, Dracovanator, Iguanadont and Nqwebosaurus.

The kids will be able to get involved with dino fossil digging, recreating dinosaur fossils, dino face painting and dino instant photos - and let off steam on jumping castles, water walking balls, zorb bouncing balls and more.

The Dino Expo takes place at the Education Centre of the Joburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 November to 7 December, and daily from 10 to 19 December.

There are three 3-hour slots - 9am to 12 noon, 12 noon to 3pm, and 3pm to 6pm - and two packages to choose from: standard, which includes the Dino Expo Tour and entrance to the Adventure Lands where you will find jumping castles, water slides, and the like; and VIP, which includes the above as well as the 50-minute theatrical show.

  • PLEASE NOTE: all standard tickets have now been sold out - there are only VIP tickets left.

VIP tickets cost R70 for kids (2-12 years) and R120 for adults (13 years and older), and can be bought through www.computicket.co.za.
