bat talk sep15 300

Join Joburg City Parks and Zoo for a stimulating Bat Talk on the evening of 19 September, and discover the important role played by bats in an urban environment.

The Talk, hosted in partnership with the Gauteng and Northern Regions Bat Interest Group, will help dispel the myths around bats, whose bad reputation can be traced back to vampire stories and cultural legends.

The only flying mammal, bats play an important role in the environment. Among other things, they contribute to seed dispersal and the pollination of plants and trees, and help keep mosquito numbers down in the warm summer months.

The Gauteng and Northern Regions Bat Interest Group (GNorBIG) helps to monitor the Zoo's bat boxes, which are specially designed to encourage bats back into urban environments.

Species commonly found in the Zoo include the Cape serotine bat and the Egyptian free-tailed bat.
