Arbor Month got under way with the ceremonial planting of 800 trees at Kanana Park, south of Johannesburg on Tuesday, 1 September.

Learners from nearby schools joined Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo staff members in planting a variety of indigenous trees as City Parks got its 2015 Arbor Month campaign under way.

City Parks MD Bulumko Nelana and Ward Councillor Mahlomola Kekana were among those who rolled up their sleeves and took turns with the spades at Tuesday's planting ceremony.

Councillor Kekana urged local resident to nurture their new trees, saying that trees in urban areas not only the value of neighbouring properties, but also boosted people's mental and physical health.

This year, City Parks is on a mission to plant 3 000 trees across the city, targeting poorer and disadvantaged areas that fall outside the "green umbrella" of the city's wealthier suburbs.

The Braamfontein Spruit will be the focus of special attention on Spruit Day, 19 September, while schools in Alexandra and Soweto, as well as cemeteries in Soweto, Lenasia and Roodepoort will also benefit.

City Parks has called on residents to join the drive, either in their own gardens or neighbourhoods, or at one of 24 planting events scheduled to take place through September.
