The opening of Leratong Park means the community of Leratong Village in Kagiso, Soweto now have somewhere where youngsters can keep themselves occupied instead of loitering round the streets of the township.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo spent approximately R2-million building the facility, which includes a five-a-side soccer pitch, netball courts, an outdoor gym, fully equipped children's playground, and a picnic and braai area.

It is also fitted out for an agri-programme aimed at providing unemployed members of the community with the opportunity to grow food for their own consumption as well as for generating some income.

The new park was officially opened by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Joburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau on Wednesday, 14 October.

Addressing the community during the handover, Premier Makhura said the park demonstrated the government's commitment to providing healthy environments for young and old alike to exercise and socialise.

"When children don't have proper recreational facilities they fall prey to crime and drug addiction," the Premier said. "We want a place where our children can go play safely."
