Johannesburg Zoo is saddened by the loss of Vidor, its popular 16-year-old lion, who succumbed to age-related illnesses at midday on Wednesday, 13 July.

Joburg Zoo saddened by the loss of Vidor the lion

A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. However, we are mindful that the lifespan of lions in the wild averages around 12 years, and that Vidor was barely coping in recent weeks.

The Zoo would like to thank its employees and commend the emergency management team from Milpark Hospital and Parkview Police, who were on hand to deal with any emergencies.

The Zoo currently hosts 7 lions and 4 lion cubs. The cubs were introduced late last year as part of the Zoo's ongoing conservation and education programme.

Messages of support can be posted on the @JoburgParksZoo Twitter handle or to its Facebook @theJohannesburgZoo.
