The tree that Nelson Mandela planted at Thokoza Park in 2008 declared a Champion Tree. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is proud to announce the declaration of the Mandela Champion Tree as a Provincial Heritage Site.

The Mandela tree has been graded as a Site II Heritage Site by the Gauteng Provincial Heritage Resources Authority (PHRA-G). This means that the tree is protected, it may not be cut, distributed or damaged and products from the tree may not be possessed, sold or transported without a license.

The rationale and significance of the Mandela Tree was informed by social cohesion principles, to enhance socio-economic development of Soweto in Particular Thokoza Park as a tourist attraction site and to form part of environmental benefits that support the man-made forest in the City of Johannesburg. #TreeVolution
