The Sandton Central Park was officially opened to the public by Johannesburg City Parks on Tuesday September 11.

THE park forms part of the City's vision of creating "a liveable city" that offers a good quality of life for all.The park, situated in the heart of Sandton, is the result of the cooperation between City Parks, Sandton Central Management District, Smile Media and Research in Motion (RIM), manufacturers of BlackBerry.

The park consists of a grassed amphitheatre, sculptured garden beds, indigenous trees, solar-powered lights, seating and a magnificent garden.

This development forms part of the City of Joburg's vision of creating "a liveable" city" that offers a good quality of life for all.

Ward Councillor Vincent Earp said the park would provide residents, employees, the public and tourists the space to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Earp said he hoped this was the beginning of similar projects.

In its statement, City Parks said the opening of the park had seen noticeable transformation.

"The upgrading of the park has also enabled the eradication of vagrants, ensuring that the green space is utilised for what is meant for – outdoor recreational activity," the entity said.

City Parks Acting Managing Director Bryne Maduka said: "Without the backing of our partners, this upgrade would [probably] not have been possible. City Parks encourages more companies to partner with us to enhance green spaces in the City of Joburg. As can be seen, in addition to enhancing the lives of citizens, such developments also help to increase the value of surrounding properties."

Rookshana Desai, the Sandton Central Manager described the opening as significant development for Sandton after six long years of planning.

Desai thanked Smiley Media and Standard Bank for the role they played in sharing the same vision to create a green environment for generations to come. She also paid tribute to residents for their support and Cllr Earp in particular for his contribution to making this dream become a reality.
Rowan Reiback a representative of Smile Media thanked all the role players for finally making the six-year dream come true.

Robyn Millham of Black Berry said since her company's brand was voted the coolest brand in the past two years this project was in line with her company's vision of striving to make customers who are the public to relax in a cool and safe environment.

Regional Manager Tisetso Mphenyeke thanked the sponsors who made the project possible. He also urged Sandton residents to fully make use of the park.
