The state-of-the-art, multimillion-rand leisure facility was built in just 48 hours in Sophiatown and is a unique, city-run spatial planning initiative that hopes to transform the Johannesburg landscape.

THE official opening ceremony took place at 1pm on Friday 19 July when Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau, and other Metropolis 2013 delegates visited the park.

This week, Metropolis hosted its annual meeting for the first time on African soil at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton. The four day event has seen mayors, officials and leaders from over 78 cities and 40 countries meet to discuss issues garnered towards enhancing development and improving the lives of citizens within an urban development context.

Issues tackled at the meeting - which this year promoted the theme 'Caring Cities' - included rapid urbanisation, food security, resource resilience, safety and security, caring cities, social cohesion and greater citizen engagement and funding models for growing cities.

The delegates discussed innovative urban practices with speakers from China, Brazil, India and South Africa scheduled to speak. The session goes beyond technology and into the realms of policy, education, regulation and management. It will explore how cities are managing rapid urbanisation as well as innovations in urban planning and management.
