Interesting in getting the behind-the-scenes angle on life at the Zoo? If you're in grades 8 to 12, you can join the BE MAD Club and spend one Saturday morning every month getting a feel for what zoo-keeping is all about.

Behaviour Enrichment Make a Difference (BE MAD) is an environmental and educational programme that focuses on enriching the lives of the Zoo's animals - while giving budding zoologists and conservationists a taste of what their future careers could involve.

Most animals like to explore and play as part of their learning process. Animals in their natural environment get to experience the exhilaration of the hunt - as well as the stress of being hunted, or of suffering from hunger, illness or injury.

In zoos, a number of these experiences are eliminated. To compensate for this, Joburg Zoo stimulates its animals by adding behaviour enrichment equipment - such as swings, hammocks, feeder balls, frozen food, ladders, climbing frames and scent trails - to their enclosures.

You'll get up close to some of the Zoo's most interesting wild animals, while learning about their habits and needs and how zoo-keepers look after their welfare.

Your first Saturday visit to the Zoo as a BE MAD Club member is free, so you can decide whether it's for you. Thereafter, there's an annual membership fee (which also gets you a Club T-shirt).
