The foundations have been laid, the workers booked and the tools prepared. On Thursday 26 March, 300 workers on a 12-hour deadline will lay grass and plant trees, paint playground equipment and build flower beds.

The park's green pitch will be revamped to accommodate a skate court, sports field, entrance feature, children's playground, fitness track and picnic shelters. The park's gym area and gym equipment as well as its cycling space will be enlarged and modernised.

The XtremePark Makeover will not only massively renovate the park while creating employment, but will also lead to further development of the area in order to attract investors and help restore the suburb.

Residents and media are encouraged to participate in the official unveiling of the new park at 16:00.

Situated south of the Johannesburg CBD, Turffontein is an area rich in history. Founded as a tented camp during the gold rush years and subsequently viewed as a working-class area, the suburb today comprises a rich cosmopolitan mix of residents.

Situated near Rotunda Park is one of the oldest buildings in the area, the Turffontein Fire Station, which was built in 1910. In 1889, Walter Casey surveyed and laid out a section of Turffontein for a circular park - Rotunda Park.
